Suspected drone flights over Genkai nuclear plant not yet confirmed
The Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) on Sunday corrected its announcement that three drones were found flying over Kyushu Electric Power's Genkai nuclear plant in Saga Prefecture around 9 p.m. on Saturday. The corrected announcement stated that three lights that appeared to be drones were spotted at the time. It cannot be said with certainty that they were drones, NRA officials said. According to the NRA, no drones or flying objects have been found on or around the plant's grounds following the incident. There have also been no abnormalities at the plant, such as a leak of nuclear materials.
Google AI can be used to make baby food safer
The baby food industry is realizing the importance of artificial intelligence (AI), to manage quality control. Japanese food producer Kewpie Corp. says that it is using Google's TensorFlow artificial intelligence, to quickly inspect ingredients that go into baby food products. This includes diced potatoes it uses in baby food, an ingredient that comes under most scrutiny in terms of safety since quality can greatly vary across batches of production and packaging. Kewpie tied up with analytics firm BrainPad Inc. to train machine learning algorithms to recognize the ingredients. The TensorFlow system was "educated" to identify the clean and healthy ingredients, by making it recognize as many as 18,000 photos of potatoes, which included acceptable and useable, as well as defective and unusable potatoes.
Experts warn Japan's language schools are becoming a front for importing cheap labor
A 29-year-old Nepalese student in Tokyo has found herself stuck in limbo with her dreams derailed, and the state of Japan's language schools is to blame. A survivor of human trafficking in the past, the woman, who wished to be identified only by her last name, Puri, came to Japan in 2014 as an exchange student. Brimming with high expectations at the time, she said she was determined to acquire a master's degree in sociology, with an emphasis on a subject dear to her, women's rights. Imagine her disappointment, then, when her dream was cut short by the Japanese-language school in Tokyo where she was studying. The school taught her only the very basics of the language, lumped her in with unmotivated students who frequently fell asleep in class and -- to her shock -- informed her that a vocational school was the only educational path it could prepare her for.
